Impact

Philanthropy, put to work.

We collaborate with philanthropic donors and organisations and help them back meaningful, high-impact work and science for the benefit of patients, a healthier society and the public good.

Our vision

Building legacy and impact together.

01 · Partner

With forward-looking donors and philanthropic organisations

We work alongside donors and the teams they fund, from first idea to lasting results.

02 · Build

Purpose-built tools and programmes

Purpose-built AI tools and programmes, supported by our research and proprietary data, aimed at enhancing the impact of philanthropic giving.

03 · Amplify

Philanthropic and impact capital

Blended with commercial and impact capital, to maximise the development and impact at scale of emerging science and technology.

Our works

Supporting next-generation Science & Medicine.

ALTs Works, our applied science and field-building initiative, shapes, designs and helps deliver high-impact programmes with forward-looking individuals, families, foundations and philanthropists. A host charity holds the money and makes every grant.

01 · Prevention

Pre-emptive and preventative medicine

Finding disease, and the risk of it, early enough to act, deliver superior healthspan and reduce costs for health systems worldwide. Our focus is on oncology, neurology, women's health and paediatrics.

Programme exampleDecoding brain aneurysm risk

A first-of-its-kind grant to support AI-driven multi-omics brain research to prevent deadly ruptures.

1 in 50Americans live with an unruptured brain aneurysm
50%of ruptures are fatal
~500,000deaths worldwide each year, half of them under 50

  • Integrates clinical and molecular data using proprietary multimodal AI models
  • Working towards the first personalised rupture-risk tool, to be named after Missy Magel, in whose memory The Missy Project was founded

With The Missy Project, UB Neurosurgery, ANSC™ and Prima Mente. The grant was awarded to UB Neurosurgery and ANSC. NOVA Neuro, an ALTs Ventures company, was a partner, and the programme predates ALTs Works.

02 · Foundations

Building the foundations of next-generation medicine

More diverse, better-used biomedical data for the AI era: sharper diagnosis, personalised prognosis, improved treatment response and faster development of new medicines, including for the populations and diseases research leaves out.

Programme exampleCommons Health

Most biomedical data comes from a narrow slice of the world's population. Research and AI built on it serve everyone else less well.

Commons Health is a philanthropic programme, built with a US philanthropic partner, to fund the shared data infrastructure research needs. It works across rare and paediatric disease, cardiometabolic disease, autoimmune disease and neurology.

  • New data from under-represented populations, regions and diseases
  • Federated biobanks and prospective cohorts, with data staying at its home institution
  • Harmonisation standards, so existing datasets can be compared and reused
  • Governance and consent frameworks that make access possible without extraction
  • Open to research, with commercial use helping to sustain it

What ALTs does. We act in an advisory capacity: scoping where evidence is missing, designing the programme and its governance, and bringing institutions and funders together. Our partner holds the funds.

Commons Bio, an ALTs Ventures company, works in the same field. It receives no programme funds and uses programme data only once published, on the same terms as anyone.

03 · Validation

Advancing the next generation of non-animal biomedical science

Proving that organoids, organ-chips and computer models can predict how medicines act in people, to bring safer treatments to patients sooner, cut costly trial failures and reduce animal testing.

04 · Precision

Precision medicine for children with rare diseases

Therapies can now be built for a single child's mutation, but each is still a one-off. A programme is planned to build the precedent and shared data that make them repeatable.
